when words and sentiment perfectly align

"There are the times you can be blindsided by someone new in ways that seem beyond anything speakable. Suddenly, you're purging these emotions as you're faced with feeling exposed and vulnerable and falling, willfully or not, into the immense amount of intimacy you were born to share." - BriAnna Olson, Director

play

i am in anticipation of my bus trip tomorrow to philadelphia.

the bus will take me to my parents house.  from their house my father and i will walk to prince theater to see sidi larbi cherkaoui's u.s. premier of play.

i fell in love with sidi larbi's work, his movement, his reapportion of gravity, and his connections between and among bodies three years ago.  the ensemble cedar lake contemporary ballet performed a commissioned work orbo novo

i've never felt confident with the words i find to express what i see, what i feel, what ideas and concepts are brought forth from dance.

even more simply, i've never expressed on a screen or on the page what affects me by a piece of brilliant choreography and astounding movement.

i will give myself that challenge.

stay tuned.

with and against gravity

handstands for pig iron summer session:  photo by Andew Loxley

it's rainy today.
so i turned on music in the living room and played with and against gravity.
it might have looked something like this.

thoughts i have on the subway. take 1

i am on the C train this morning - coming back from brooklyn.

a man stands in between the subway doors.  a rather stomached man - he wears a button down shirt and something slightly fancier than a pair of dockers.  (those are pants, yes?)

whatever the brand, the pants are held up by a brown belt.  and the shirt, the buttoned down dress shirt, tucked into his pants and anchored by the belt, stays in place until minor movements of the man's arms create ripples of fabric.  soon the stomach that was defined becomes incorporated into the canvas of his body now draped by an ocean of white and currents of pin stripes.

stations pass.

we travel under water.  and then into lower manhattan.

the man finds need to re-tuck his shirt before stepping through the subway doors out onto a financial district platform.  i can't help but notice his belly and then the circumference of his center.  larger than average, sloping down towards the ground.

i begin to think of the different ways fabric is used in the ritual of covering bodies and creating shapes.

it leads me to wonder, as my eyes turn to the car full of passengers - what shapes exist underneath all of our layers?

the potential of "in between"

Bodies are in between[my emphasis]  They don't connect the disciplines; they rather amalgamate them into something that did not exist before.  Strange conglomerates of bodies, texts, light, objects, colours, spaces, music, images, emotions, what else?  You may hear a movement, see a sound, listen to darkness.  - Bettina Milz "Conglomerates"

The potential of "in between" - the actions that can arise, do arise from the center of the prepositional phrase is what makes it my favorite part of language.

Inspiration

Reading "The Body as Archive: Will to Re-Enact and the Afterlives of Dances"

Reading "The Body as Archive: Will to Re-Enact and the Afterlives of Dances" by André Lepecki and thinking about the following questions:

"Is it possible to affirm a past that is not always already 'misplaced'? Is it possible to affirm any memory (cultural in particular) that does not somehow already 'fail' to be fully present, and fully connected to the present?" ...
